The Brooks Wall, Venice Beach California, December 1999
The Brooks Wall came about when I was moving from my place on Brooks Avenue and I was about to have my first solo show at the Soapbox Gallery in Venice. I decided that I didn't want to take the work to my new place so I screwed about 10 pieces onto a construction wall on Oceanfront and Brooks and left them there for two weeks. One of the incense sellers across from the work said that he'd see tourists take pictures all day long. The day before I was to hang my show at Soapbox I was standing out in front of the gallery with the owner (Vitor) when the L.A.P.D. pulled up. They had caught some kid trying to steal my art! From that day Venice beach- Oceanfront started calling me- for three weeks the work hung untouched (I thought I might paint back into any graffiti but the work remained respected) It was when some kid on drugs pulled a piece down when the cops got him. The cops were protecting my art. They were a little pissed when I didn't PRESS charges (I talked to the kids Mom about Al-anon cause he was on sherm or something when he decided to start collecting art haha).
